How to read Google reviews before choosing the right team

We all do it.

We Google a business, glance at the star rating and make a call in about ten seconds.

It is not just for restaurants or tradies anymore.

We do it when choosing the people and businesses we trust with some pretty important decisions.

And that makes sense.

But here is the catch.

A rating on its own does not tell the full story.

The star rating is just the headline

A high rating, backed by a good number of reviews, is a great starting point. It tells you that:

  • people are engaging
  • most experiences have been positive
  • the business is active and visible

But what it does not tell you is:

  • how problems are handled when things do not go to plan
  • what communication is really like
  • whether the experience is consistent across different clients
  • how people are treated over time

That is where reading between the lines becomes important.

Look for patterns, not perfection

A perfect five star score can look great. But if there are only a handful of reviews behind it, it is hard to know what the real experience is like.

What you are really looking for is consistency.

  • Do the same positives come up again and again?
  • Do people feel well looked after?
  • Is there a pattern you can trust?

That is what gives you confidence.

Volume over time tells a much clearer story than a perfect score on its own.

If you are choosing a property manager, here’s how to read the reviews

Property management is often assessed differently, and for good reason.

It is not just about results. It is about relationships.

A good property management team has to balance:

  • looking after the property owner’s investment
  • supporting tenants in a fair and respectful way
  • managing maintenance, communication, and expectations

When reviewing a business in this space, look for:

  • responsiveness and communication
  • how maintenance is handled
  • whether tenants feel respected
  • whether owners feel informed and protected

This matters more than people think.

Because when tenants are treated well, properties are generally better cared for, and owners benefit from more stable tenancies and fewer issues.

Choosing a sales team? Look beyond the outcome

In sales, people often focus on the end result.

But reviews tell you how that result was achieved.

Look for comments around:

  • honesty and clear advice
  • guidance through the process
  • communication during the campaign
  • support during what can be a stressful time

Because the experience matters just as much as the outcome.

What about the negative reviews?

They matter too.

One or two lower reviews do not define a business.
In fact, a mix of feedback can often feel more genuine.

What is more important is:

  • how often the same issues appear
  • how the business responds
  • whether there is accountability and professionalism

A thoughtful response can say more than a perfect score ever could.

A quick way to assess any company

If you only have a couple of minutes, here is a simple way to read reviews:

  • check that reviews are recent
  • scan for repeated themes
  • look for comments about communication and follow through
  • read at least one lower review and the response
  • trust patterns, not one off comments

This approach will give you a much clearer picture than the rating alone.

A local example

At First National Progressive, we have over 400 Google reviews, with more than 90 percent of our clients rating us five stars.

We are proud of that, but more importantly, the feedback consistently reflects what we focus on every day. Clear communication, follow through, and looking after people properly.

That applies across the board. Whether someone is:

  • selling their home
  • working with us as a landlord
  • or renting through us as a tenant

Because good outcomes come from good experiences, not just good results.

The bottom line

Google reviews are a powerful tool.

But they work best when you look past the number and understand the story behind it.

If you are choosing a real estate agent or property management company, take a few extra minutes to read properly.

It will make the decision much clearer.
